LM_NET: Library Media Networking
We too have had our share of "incidences" but I have chosen not to become
too excited about the whole thing. I have learned that the students see
computers as their access to the world. I use email and love it. I have been
known to surf the web. I have been on chat lines. Gradually I have learned
what is worth my time and what is not. Just as students at my school now
start their research with books and then go to the web, they will eventually
put email and chat rooms into their proper perspective.
Many of the students at my school who have their own email accounts (we
donot provide email to students) are bright, inquisitive and independent
students who do not have computers at home. Before blocking email, I suggest
that we consider the equity issue from all sides. I am using the need for
students to access email accounts as another point in my argument that the
school needs more computers accessible by all students.
I congratulate the students who insist on accessing their email accounts.
They are the students we need as tech allies. They can become our supporters
if only their needs are recognized.
The school does not need to teach students how to change the wallpaper
screens, to access email, to open chat rooms. The students show each other
and they would show us if only we would ask.
