Dear Jo Anne,

In our school district, our curriculum guides (i.e.language arts)for each
discipline, lists the books that may be read by classrooms at each grade level.
This was done so the situation you describe will not occur. For instance April
Morning is read at 8th grade level.

If a teacher in a lower grade reads to her class a book that is to be used at a
higher grade's curriculum, then they can be notified by the Department
Chairperson, or the Curriculum Coordinator that they need to consult the
curriculum guide, to determine what may not be used at that level. They may
also be reminded that they are making it difficult for the appropriate grades
to cover the School Departments course of study, when the lower grades read the
books to their classes, or require it for classroom reading.

Hope this helps.
