Dear Colleagues,
I am a member of our town's Neighborhood Crime Watch group and we are
alerted of crimes in our area regularly. The idea of this is to put us
on the alert not to advertise. A recent posting told of a scam where
local citizens are called by someone purporting to be from the county
court system. The potential vistim is told that a jury duty application
was not received by their office and then the caller takes the
information over the phone. The information includes social security #,
mother's maiden name employer, etc. The caller is really filling out a
credit card application in the victim's name. The posting ends with Do
not become a victim of identity theft! NEVER give personal information
over the phone or Internet.
When I am asked for registration info on the Internet(esp. travel sites)
I give them my school street address and phone number but never my SS#.
