We collect fines (5 cents per school day), but I personally do not make
students pay fines before they check out additional books. I will not
allow them to check out more books if they have *overdues* (I'm concerned
about getting the books back, but not much concerned about collecting
fines once the books have been returned to me.) I simply remind the
student who owes a fine, and I ask him/her to "promise" he/she will come
back to pay the fine "tomorrow."
My principal will hold grade cards for fines over $1.00 and/or
books more than a month overdue. I then keep the grade cards at the
circulation desk and hand them out once obligations are met.
Unfortunately, I usually end up with about 25 D and F grade cards. I'd
like to devise a system whereby I then call these students' parents and
say, "You know your son/daughter's grade card is being held because of
overdues..."
