Thank you so much to everyone that gave suggestions! Its been a year since I read
the book, so even though I absolutely loved it, I was having trouble with specific
ideas.  You guys are wonderful!

I think I thanked everyone individually, but if I somehow missed you, please know
that I really appreciated the input!

Activites Ideas:

*
        Maybe give the kids the option of competing solo, in a pack, or with a
partner?
* Video record the competition and play it for the entire school?
* station where students learn to tie knots. Maybe have a boy scout of
someone to teach it
* You could also set up a target and buy one of those kiddie archery sets
(the kind with blunt or
        plastic arrows)
* Make your own emblem like the Mockingjay Katniss wears?
* How about using a compass to locate survival items?
* You could even do a survival "vote the character off the island/book"
about who they want
        to keep in the next book?
* Design your own costumes for battle contest?
* Use building materials and have them recreate District 12 or the
        Capitol, or they could use online design programs to do it using
        computers if you have them?
* How about wordles creation for the characters or the book itself?
        www.wordle.net <http://www.wordle.net>
* Hunger Games collage from magazine and newspaper cuttings?
* Maybe they could make paper dolls for younger students based on the
        characters and give a play recreating the less gory scenes?
* You can even create mazes to recreate the skills and difficulty needed
        to get out of district 12 when the electric fence becomes reactivated?
* How about reader's theatre? You'd have to create scripts, but I find
        kids love dramatic expression when they don't have to memorize the words
        and they really get into the characters and theme doing it.
*       Include a cornucopia.
*
        If you're very, very sure you won't catch flak for it, you could set up a
variant of the "Assassination" game; give each kid a folded piece of paper with the
name of a weapon on it, and turn them loose. Ranged weapons would have to be
thrown, whereas if they have the "knife," they must actually touch someone with it.
Again, I could see this backfiring, so I'd get your principal's backing before
going for it, although the kids would love it. If you can do it outside, maybe
water guns?
*
        we are thinking about basing it somewhat on Survivor- breaking the students
into
        tribes and giving them challenges. One challenge could be trivia from
        the book, other challenges may be more physical.
*
        what about a face painting station (Peeta can disguise/camouflage
        himself both in the area and in training)?
*
        How about a three legged race between pairs of kids? Show them it's easier
to work together than separately.
*
        Perhaps something with genetics, with crossing various types of animals,
such as the mockingjay. Assign them various animals and have them develop them as
a hybrid weapon.

Snack Ideas:

*
        squirrel stew
*
        different kinds of berries
*
        coarse bread
*
        jerky
*
        hot chocolate
