** Confidential **

I had numerous requests for a HIT so here goes:

"mahn-ga" or "mon-ga" is the correct pronunciation, based on the
replies I've received.

The following sources may not be the most authoritative and definitive,
based on professional selction criteria, but I've had enough replies
confirming "mahnga" that it works for me. One of those replies is from
someone who asked her Japanese colleague. Good 'nuf for now!

If you have information to the contrary of "mahnga" with a good info
source to confirm, please don't hesitate to post to me privately.

Info sources to confirm "mahnga"

1. "...just asked my Japanese co-worker. It's pronounced "mon-ga" ...
(she) thought about the "bad word" connotation with the word manga and
she told me (blushing ) that it IS close to the word "manko" which is a
slang term for a women's private parts. Don't know how your students
knew that! Anyway, the word for the BOOKS is pronounced mon-ga..."

2. <http://www.animecritic.com/resources/glossary.html>
(*mahn-gah*) seems to be the acceptable pronunciation.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/manga gives an audio file
which
also pronounces the word as "mahn-gah"
