I have a Kindergarten teacher in my school who will not allow her class to check
out books. The first year I was here, 2 years ago, she would not let them checkout
for the entire year. Last year, she finally allowed them to check out. This year
she is not letting them check out again. I feel bad for them because the other K
classes can check out. I sent home Parent contracts (another hot topic lately) and
all the parents signed them, so I don't see why they can't check out books. I
realize it is not my class and really probably none of my business. I just hate to
see a class being the only class in the school that is not allowed to check out
books. Year before last, a parent wrote a note to the teacher and asked why her
child could not check out books. From then on she let that child only check out a
book and the rest still could not. I taught kindergarten for 8 years so I know how
they can be. However, many children do not have books in their homes and need to
be read to nightly. In the other classes it is a "homework" assignment to have a
parent read the child's library book to him/ her nightly. Those classes come daily
to exchange their books. I am afraid that if I try to talk to her she will feel I
am telling her how to run her classroom which I would not ever do. I don't want to
over step my boundaries so I just sit here and whine I guess. (smile) It just
really bothers me. Does this happen in any other schools?
