Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak by Kay Winters, illustrated by Larry
Day. Dutton, 2008. 978-0-525-47872-0
Boston, December 16, 1773. The day unfolds from dawn to dusk in this
exceptional portrait of a city, a day, a movement, an event that
changed a people and created a nation. The story of the Boston Tea
Party is told through a series of authentic colonial voices, from
Patriot to Loyalist and in-between, from male and female, young and
old, white, black, and Native. Each voice speaks in free verse,
revealing his or her perspective on the tea-laden ships and the tax
to be imposed by the Tea Act. Should it be paid? Should the ships be
sent back to England? Or should the tea be disposed of in an act of
rebellion? This creative account will engage students in the tumult
of the day as they analyze perspectives and learn a great deal about
Colonial American society, mores, social strata, and roles. Sepia
toned watercolor and ink illustrations as well as carefully chosen
font and design elements all transport the reader to 1773. In
addition, back matter provides additional background about each
"voice" and his or her trade and position in Colonial society. A
glossary and extensive bibliography round out this excellent
text. This is an essential purchase for elementary and middle
schools and public library children's rooms. Suggested grades: 3-7.
