Our Student Council moderator has come to me for advice, and I want to make
sure I give her the correct info.
The situation: Our students often design tee-shirts for various school clubs
and activities throughout the year. These shirts are then sold to the
students. This year's Winter Dance theme is "The 1960s." Some of the
submitted designs include the Woodstock logo (the bird on the guitar
handle), the "Yellow Submarine" image from the Beatles (just the sub, not
the whole album cover or any text), and an early photo of the Beatles. Would
all of these still be considered under copyright, and therefore off-limits?
Obviously, there's no "educational fair use" at issue here.
The back side of many of these designs have short quotes, with the artist
credited, from song lyrics. That is allowable, correct?
Thanks in advance for your help.
