Moving Childrens' Book Week to May means that many of us will probably not be able
to celebrate now. Many schools across the country finish a school year in mid-late
May and there are just too many things going on during those last couple of weeks to
try to celebrate CBW. We have Read Across America in March, National Library Week
in April, plus National Poetry Month in April. It just seems like overkill to then
have CBW in May. My theory is that it was changed with public libraries in mind.
They
have their summer reading program kickoff in early June and this helps them build
up support and excitement for that. Unfortunately, I think it is now going to go
by the wayside at a lot of school libraries.
