Here are the couple responses I received. I will post more if I receive more.
What about a book plate to recognize the students' achievements? It's
a cheap and easy way to honor someone.
We have a librarian's award that is selected each nine weeks. The
student who has improved the most in reading is chosen by the teacher
in each classroom . That child gets to choose a book (we usually try
to get them to pick one of our new ones, but, hey, if the kid is a
lover of the Berenstain Bears Picnic book, that's ok, too.) We then
fill in a book plate naming the student, the award, and the date and
put it inside the front. The student gets to check-out the book to
show his parents, but understands that it stays in circulation in the
library.
We have been doing this for about 5 years and it's interesting to see
middle schoolers rediscover a book with their name in it from their
elementary days.
Here's what I do...
I celebrate for a whole week with each day of the week celebrating a
different dr. seuss book. I share the book and do some fun activity. On
my tables in the library I set up different contests for kids to
participate in to win free paperback books, pencils and bookmarks..
ex.
Monday...is Cat in the Hat day. Read/share story. Activity=design a
machine that would help them clean up their room. ( I supply paper,
pencils, colors)
Tuesday....Foot Day...Read/Share story. Activity= Shoe pile race (kids
take off shoes, pile in middle of floor, race to see who gets shoes on
first, tied and sitting criss/cross and quiet0.
Wed....Horton Hatches a who day. Read/Share story. Activity=kids take
two animals and cross them..draw on paper.
Thurs.....One fish, two fish....Read/Share story. Activity= CLass book
of opposites (kids create).
Friday.....Sneetches day. Read/Share story. Activity= What makes a good
friend....Kids create an acronym poem of their best friends name.

Here is an updated version of my Famous Read Across America Dr. Seuss
Powerpoint.
You may use it for your celebration. You may add slides or remove
slides
to suit your needs.
I just ask that you do NOT remove my name from it.
