The Digital World - Right at Our Fingertips: Strategies for Achieving
Global Literacy A WEMTA Workshop
How do we help our students thrive in an International environment? It
is important to provide students with an education that will prepare
them for the increasingly complex world of the 21st Century. Students
need to be able to use 21st century skills to understand other nations,
cultures and global issues. We can ensure that they are receiving a
global perspective by assisting them in obtaining skills and cultural
understanding needed to thrive in an international environment. The
Wisconsin DPI has broken this down into 5 C's: Communication,
Citizenship, Careers, Culture and Community.
Workshop Choices:
E-Field trips: Electronic field trips knock down the walls of the
classroom and help students toward their global literacy skills. Imagine
your social studies class connecting to their peers in Quito, Ecuador to
discuss their schools and communities -how they are alike and how they
are different. Or having your 2nd graders connect to a class in Greece
to talk about their winter celebrations. Understanding world cultures
and beliefs is of major importance to our youth as they become adults in
a global society. Connect to several intriguing e-trip sites for this
"travelling" session. (session is repeated)
Web 2.0 Demo of Best Collaborative Tools: Awareness session. Our
students have the world at their fingertips, literally - except when
they are in school! Then they are for the most part cut off from the
immense wealth of technology gadgets and communications tools that are
and will be available to them as citizens of the 21st Century. Yes,
there are dangers, but they need to learn to navigate that world of
useful, enriching, educational information while avoiding the darker
side. This workshop will feature safe and effective ways to use many of
the excellent educational resources available out there beyond the
firewalls. Google.docs, Delicious, TeacherTube, Skype, Moodle,
Thinkfinity, Elluminate, Flickr, and Del.icio.us are examples of
collaborative tools that help teachers and students communicate beyond
the classroom. (session is repeated)
Web 2.0 Hands on use of Best Collaborative Tools: In depth hands-on
session to allow further exploration of collaborative tools which
enhance classroom technology use. This session will give you a chance
to "sample" how to effectively use the tools presented. (session is
repeated)
Framework & Standards for Global Literacy in the Content Areas: Are you
overwhelmed by the ever-advancing flow of technologies that could be
used in classrooms?? Not sure how your curriculum and content meet
technology and prepare your students for the real world? This session
will help educators understand the Framework for 21st Century Skills
(adopted by DPI) and tie them to the Wisconsin ITLS standards and the
new ISTE NETS standards for students. Examples of lessons, tools,
resources, and strategies to integrate 21st Century Skills will be
provided. (session is repeated)
Careers/career Exploration for a Global Workforce: In this session,
explore some of the great cyber tools available for students in the area
of career exploration and job awareness. WIS Careers, Career Cruising,
RU Ready, ask an expert, and many other web resources will be explored.
Project Based Collaborative Learning Projects: In today's work world,
employees are often part of teams expected to produce results
collaboratively...a 21st Century skill. They may even be working with
team members in other parts of the country or world. This session will
focus on resources, units and lessons that will help students learn
collaboration and productivity skills. We'll be exploring many free or
inexpensive tools and resources for you to use. (session is repeated)
Professional Development for Teachers in a Cultural World: It is the
rare classroom today that has no mix of races and cultures within its
walls. The more awareness and understanding that exists among the
players, the better for all. A great way for teachers to increase their
own cultural understanding is to live and work in another culture for a
period of time. A presenter will discuss a first-hand teacher exchange
opportunity, and reflect on how it changed their teaching.
Filtering Options for a Global Community: Technical strand - This
session will cover filtering and blocking issues, and explore
alternatives and safe strategies for allowing teachers and students
access to the many educational web tools.
Archiving and the Law (email, voicemail, etc.): Technical Strand - How
much to keep?" and "How long to keep it?" are probably the two most
frequently asked questions in regards to the public records retention
laws, but there are lots of others. Discuss and explore the issues with
area experts.
