[LM_NET] American History reference books

My high school students will be doing research reports about American
History.  One teacher is focusing on controversial decisions made over
time.  What general American history reference books  do you recommend that
we purchase for this report and other American history ones?  Also, what
history data base do you find to be the most inclusive?
