The Revere Local School District, as well as all the districts connected
with our DA site, has upgraded to Web Washer as our internet filter.
With the previous internet filter a number of our high school staff
members had override capabilities, i.e. to show a clip of Queen
Elizabeth*s Christmas Day speech from YouTube which is blocked.
We have been told that no override passwords would be issued to staff -
for our own protection, given the emphasis on accountability with strict
consequences being considered for teachers in Ohio, and for the
students* protection.
I am distressed. I consider it part of my job to evaluate web sites,
to create subject specific web pages for our library web page and to
teach others how to evaluate sites. I have used the override to do my
work at work.
What is happening in other school districts? Are other staff members,
librarians, permitted overrides to their internet filtering systems?
