I thought this might be of interest to many on the list.
How do I find out what books are in the running?
I don't. You can't.
I just read like crazy. I start with authors of books that I like. I get galleys of
books at the ALA conference. I like to read first time authors. I look for a
variety of genre- this is part of our school curriculum. I ask other librarians
what they are reading and loving. I read reviews and grab the starred books. I go
to local events and make sure I ask everyone what they think is great this year. I
create a short list of about twenty books and then narrow it down for September
when the kids are back in school. I have missed great books that I would have liked
to have included but I didn't read fast enough like Keeping Corner and Wild Girls.
I emphasize with the kids that there is no way that we will have read like the
real committee and we may not even have read the book that wins the real one. Can't
wait for Monday!!! Lisa
