[LM_NET] Beowulf: Grendel the Ghastly

My brother and wife bought me a book for Christmas that I am intrigued with  It's a 
picture book adaptation of Beowulf.  It's adapted by Michelle Szobody and 
illustrated by Justin Gerard.  The text is simple, yet retains poetic feel.  The 
book has footnotes with phonemic pronunciations of the character's names and there 
is an appendix at the back that not only names the characters and who they are, but 
also defines literary terms such as  epic, kenning, litotes, metonymy.  The 
illustrations are luminous. The monster, Grendel is appropriately very dragonlike 
and dark.  There will apparently be two more volumes that follow this, the second 
entitled Beowulf Book Two: The Monster's Mother.

I bought a copy of it for our library from Amazon, but noticed the website in the 
book www.beowulfthebook.com .  There's a pretty good preview in the web site.

I am anxious to show this to our fifth graders who are so enthralled with Mary Pope 
Osborne's Tales of the Odyssey.  I plan to introduce it during class time soon to 
see their reaction.  Even though it's a picture book I would think it would be an 
excellent introduction to Beowulf with older students.  I'm anxious to hear if 
anyone else has discovered the book and what your reaction is.
