Remember diagramming sentences? All those lines spurting off the main
stem of the sentences denoting prepositional phrases and direct and
indirect objects? This thesis builder
(http://www.ozline.com/electraguide/thesis.html ) reminds me of that
process--it is a clunky, but effective, way to understand how various
parts (the pro and con arguments) add up to the whole (the thesis
statement). For students who have trouble organizing their
thoughts--I'm thinking of my own son, as well as other students I've
encountered--this tool is an excellent start. The finished product
needs editing, but the basic argument is there. How is it not original?
Unless the student has copied/pasted from another source, the only
elements not original are the links between the phrases.
How is it plagiarizing or cheating? The key element still and always
rests with the student. Did they copy/paste from another source, or are
the words their own? In fact, I think this tool may discourage
plagiarizing. The more the research process is broken down, the less
likely a student will be able to shop around on the Internet for someone
else's finished product.
