Thank you and three gold stars to Helen Bolte who ran down the Nora
Joyce remark and shared her results with me off list. The wording of the
quote is slightly different from the common version: "Why don't you
write sensible books that people can understand?"
Jorn Barger on his Robot Wisdom site
(http://www.robotwisdom.com/jaj/nora.html) credits it to Richard
Ellmann's biography, "James Joyce," p. 590 of the 2nd edition. Neither
Helen nor I has the Ellmann book at hand, but it seems a credible
source.
For anyone who still cares (perhaps nobody at this point), I also have a
reference request in at the Charlottte-Mecklenberg County public, since
they have the quote etched into their building.
Cheers,
---Bob.
