It's true, ANYONE can apply to be a guide. I did it for a little while
in the spring, when I had more free time. I've done searches guided and
unguided for my own use. Sure, there's no way to really, really be sure
of the quality of a guide, but it sure is nice to have an extra pair of
eyes looking for something with you.

As guides, we are rated by users-did we do a good job or not? Before
we're turned loose to the general population, we do have to do training
searches, to make sure we do a good job and know how to use the
interface.

I don't know that I would use it for too much scholarly research, but
like I said, sometimes a second pair of eyes is a big help!

You see, I don't believe that libraries should be drab places where
people sit in silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of
employing wild animals as librarians. (Monty Python skit)

And so the moment we persuade a child, any child, to cross that
threshold into a library, we've changed their lives forever, and for the
better. This an enormous force for good. (Senator Barack Obama,
addressing the American LIbrary Association, June 2005.)
