Original post:
I want to create a list of books to pass on to a teacher for recommending to her
fourth
grade "high readers..reading at the 7th and 8th grade level (but still can
probably only handle 4th grade content)."

I've suggested that she start with some pre-1985ish Newbery winners,
watching for those with protagonists that aren't in their older teen years.

RESPONSES:
I would rec. looking at the nominations for the Rebecca Caudill Young
Readers' Book Award. The books go up through the junior high level and
can get quite challenging. The lists are at:

I love Richard Peck's books such as A Long Way from Chicago and A Year Down Yonder
for stronger upper elementary readers. Great stories, some more sophisticated
humor.

I've had a lot of trouble with this too, and the most common response
when I ask for suggestions is, "it really is hard to find books like
that!"

I've been looking at a slightly lower level- 4th-6th grade reading
level for a youngish 1st or second grader- and I've had some luck
with non-fiction, biography, and some picture books that have longer,
more difficult stories (ones that are meant to be read to mid-
elementary age children.)

It's not much to go on, but it's given us places to start browsing,
and we've found some really interesting topics we might not have
looked for otherwise.

Try Mackin's web site, www.mackin.com, or better yet, call them,
1-800-245-9540 and let them serve you with a recommended list. After all,
Master degreed librarians work for Mackin. They answer their phone, too.

Our 5th graders (all boys, advanced readers) read Colfer, Horowitz, T.
A. Barron, P. Pullman, John Flanagan, Paolini.
These writers are appropriate for 10-11 yr. olds at my school.
