To echo Dr. Simpson's call to embrace the reconsideration process, Over the many
years (30+) I spent as a school media specialist I have participated on many
reconsideration committees as well as been the recipient of a couple challenges.
The process works. It isn't to be feared. It is part of the democratic process.
I have been lucky to have experience only one book removal. That item (from the
50's) should have been removed in the normal weeding process because it no longer
met the selection criteria (bias and stereotyping). I was thrilled with the
process.
I tell my students to work the process because the process works for them. The
problem comes when there isn't a process or a selection policy or people who aren't
willing to insist that the process is followed.
