My PDU domains (Oregon)--your's may be stated slightly differently.
Subject Area or Speciality
Content of the subject matter or specialty area directly related to the
educator's current assignment(s) or to responsibilities the educator reasonably
expects to be assigned.
Methods and Curriculum
Methods for effective teaching, classroom management, counseling, supervision,
leadership, and curriculum development.
State and National Educational Priorities
Knowledge of State and national education priorities and the application of that
knowledge to one's school and district programs.
These are the areas where I have identified LM-NET would be ONE of my sources of
information to help me to keep current in the best practices in librarianship.
(Notice the ONE OF...it is NOT the sole source of my PDU hours.) Please remember,
you need to have your administrator ALSO believe that the time that you spend
reading and writing is valuable in keeping you current in your field. I also count
district media meetings, working on adoption committees, book study, and the
occasional workshop or online class.
Think about the discussions we have had. How do we help our student populations
through the library? What methods or curriculum give us the best source of
information for a particular lesson (source for smart board lessons, Big 6,
research)? WE talk about state and national educational priorities (NCLB/ US
bills/ ALA). We ask what is happening in other areas of the world that could help
us to expand our knowledge of the changes in research (web 2.0 anyone???). We
receive book reviews. We network across country boundraries (STILL would like to
hear more from librarians in other countries--I love the fact that we have recently
had posts from Korea, Germany, and The Philippines).
I have listed mentoring time when I have answered or encouraged someone's post. 1
hr=1PDU. I google LM-NET and my name and list the dates of the posts. I keep a
note pad with dates and time on LM-NET. If I READ a post (because it pertains to
my job), I list the date and time. If I respond, then it is listed on mentoring and
I list the date and time. I also list the names of people who respond when I
write a post that helps them. I save many of the posts in a folder named: LM_NET
Mentoring EMAILS.
Okay, REMEMBER, I did say that I have no life. But with just a bit of effort and
time, I am able to meet 1/3 of my PDUs with almost no effort.
I do this at home. Which is why there are lapses between some of my posts and
responses. Occasionally life does happen even in my world, and it comes first.
Also, my reading of LM-NET is while watching TV in the evenings or weekends.
I remember thanking someone for sharing their words of wisdom and insights when I
was feeling the newness of being a librarian at only 5 years (this was a couple of
years ago). Come to find out, she had only been a librarian for 6 years. So it is
not the about of time in the profession that makes you an expert, but the
willingness to share what you believe and have seen work.
I hope this has helped. (another 25 min in mentoring)
OHHH, I am looking for the next book study group. Anyone have a suggestion and
willingness to "meet" and discuss the chapters?

I count posting to LMNET and my state network as part of my professional
development plan. It is part of my CDU's that I count for the year for
recertification of my license. That is why I feel that I can spend the time reading
and responding to posts, I am listing the time that I do this as profession related.
As, I don't have a life. But seriously, I count LMNET as important reading SLJ or
Teacher Librarian Journal. I could not be as effective in my schools without these
resources.
But, make sure that what you post is something that you don't mind being part of
your life for the rest of your life. Since we are NOT anonymous, and googling
names and schools, and towns, what we post is out there in the WWW. (especially,
if you have an unusual name :-} )
If you want it secret, then only respond to someone's request without posting to
LM-NET. JaKay Greer Teacher-LibrarianMiddle schoolAlbany, Oregon
