Hi!
Thank you to everyone who shared expertise.
The 2 most mentioned resources were:
Grolier Online
and
The World Book Student Discovery Encyclopedia set.
Other recommendations:
Grolier Online
which has The New Book of Knowledge, Amazing Animals of the World, an
encyclopedia of states, and Land and Peoples which covers the globe.
There is also a Grolier Multimedia encyclopedia which has shorter
articles but covers more topics than a standard encyclopedia and a
nice interactive atlas. I still find that some of the articles are
hard for my students (4th and 5th), but it's our #1 resource.
World Almanac for Kids
An online subscription to netTrekker would provide three levels of
teacher-&-librarian-screened Web sites.
World Book online
EBSCO subscription data bases for young students.
World Book.
World Book Student Discovery.
