Thank you to all who posted on high school library décor!

I started my high school position in January. When I got there it was very
brown and depressing. I have windows the full length of the library on both
sides that open into hallways. I enlisted the art teachers. I have student
work put on the glass all along the glass. It was a win/win. The art
teachers were happy and willing to give me art work to put up. The kids
noticed their work and I had free decorations. In June we had the custodian
place a clothes line at the top of the glass. We plan on putting up some of
the sewing teacher's project.

Hope this helps.

I'd buy as many of the ALA READ posters as I could afford.

Have you considered going around the school with a digital camera and
photographing students reading? You can print them out in 8 1/2 -11 laminate
and hang it up around your library?

Another idea is to have student artwork put up. Collaborate with the art
teacher(s) and ask them to submit student work. Perhaps have a contest - so
students can illustrate parts of the Dewey system... to guide students.

ALA Graphics has some nice posters

Hope that helps.

I have hung inexpensive garden flags (usually found on eBay) on the walls or
from the ceiling to add color.

The high school art dept may help create some outstanding graphic posters
for you. It looks better than cheap posters.

Our high school library has a sports theme we have sports posters, college
pennants, a bulletin board featuring any newspaper articles about our teams,
and some sports items, like a basketball net. Every year the librarian
raffles off the sports posters at the end of the year. Raffle tickets to
those who have all their books turned in. Then she gets different ones for
the next year.

Color is important to me as well to set a look in the library. I have
special colors that I emphasize, and an 8th grade class painted some
wonderful graphics (one was a Garfield with a pile of books around
complaining about being bored) using touches of my colors. Art classes also
provided prints that are long, but not very tall. I framed them and plan to
hang them near the ceiling on support beams. Another area I plan to tackle
at some time are ceiling panels. Best of luck with your plans.

For cheap try this: We had staff members donate fabric that they had at
home. We (student helpers) made our own banners without sewing, just
cutting and gluing. We had a few people on staff who used to sew or who did
crafts. They had a surprising amount of fabric in large pieces.

You can use the banners year after year so in two years you build up tons of
decorations. For example, we cut large letters that said reference. We
glued that on a large skinny rectangle of another colored fabric. Then we
hung it from the ceiling in the reference area.

If you really want printed posters, call vendors such as Follett,
Scholastic. They'll send you posters of their projects.

I just ordered several of the celebrity reads posters from ALA. I don't know
if you would call them cheap at 12.99, but I have had really good responses
about them. I got a discount for ordering 5 or more.

Use bright colored fabric as much as possible.

I am in a similar situation - the library is 'clean' but not teen friendly.
Anyway, here is an article I found when I was looking for ideas over the
weekend.

Why not cover some of the windows with bright colored gift wrap? I have
used gift wrap on bulletin boards, windows, walls, etc. I also use the cheap
plastic table cloths, because they come in so many colors and are about $1.

I have also used Beach towels that have an appealing picture for the age
group where I work. Rock stars, movies stars, current animated movies are
good.

TA Barron, author, will send you a packet of posters and bookmarks with
pictures from his novels. Just go to his website.

I like to hit Target, Shopko, etc. this time of year and pick up some of the
inexpensive things that they are marketing to college students for their
dorm rooms. I have an inexpensive "open" neon sign and a "ketchup-bottle"
lava lamp that the kids like.

I have appealed to the art teachers and other teachers who have assigned
posters as projects. Not only does the students' work brighten up the
library for free, but sometimes I get students coming in to see their work
and staying to look at books.
