Hi Pat,
I have a B.A. in geography.[thought I'd be a city planner after I
sailed around the world - ha! wrong choice!!] :)
I think that ANY B.A. or B.S. is a great background major for the
librarian. A solid 'world view' is incredibly valuable for any
librarian in any field of library work. A When I am asked about how
does one study to be a librarian I always say to:
1 - get experience by working in your school, academic or public
library [an assistant's role gives you the 'hands on' sklls that you
don't get in the MLS program and helps solidify your interest in the
field]; and
2 - get an undergraduate degree in something that interests you and
3- READ!
Just my opinion!

I have had a few students ask me how they can become a librarian.
Being a school librarian is a second career for me and I was accepted
into graduate school with an undergraduate degree in Anthropology. I
can't imagine this was the best route.
What is the recommended educational path to follow? (Do undergraduate
degrees in Library Science even exist any more?) What kind of
background did you have going into grad school and how well did it
prepare you for your career?
