No, I have 1.5 hours of duty a week that takes me out of the library. Each of my
duties are 30 min duties. One is 30 before school, working out front to help
students "unload", get through the parking lot safely, and keep the traffic moving.
The other two duties are recess duty.
Our library had always operated 8:15-3:15 each day and we were closed for students
with passes 11:30-12:30 while I ate lunch and took a planning time. Basically we
were open all day, and everyone knew that students couldn't come with passes during
that hour (most students were at lunch/recess during that hour.)
My principal made BIG changes for the librarian (that's me) starting last year. I
was given a fixed planning time and the library was closed because on any given day
I might be needed to cover a class with no substitute during that 40 min. Also, I
had more lunch/recess duty each week. Last year the library was closed 90 min each
day. I was very conflicted about how to deal with that.
This year, there are a few changes. On Thursdays the library doesn't open until
8:30 because I am out front. The best news is that I have a 1/2 time asst for the
first time ever. She arrives when my planning/lunch/duty time of day begins. Last
year, the library was closed 90 min each day. This year only 15 one morning each
week. The best part over all is that students have more access and our circulation
is already up over last year. Hey, I need to put that into a
"Beginning-of-the-year" report!!

My new principal has assigned me to hall duty this year. If your school has hall
duty, are you as a librarian assigned also?
