This suggestion was on LMNet a few years ago--and it has worked for me:
Tape a plastic spoon to the pencil. It makes the pencil very odd, and it
gets left at the computer. I taped mine so that I could sharpen the pencil
several times before moving the spoon. I put the spoon part at the eraser
end, and ran the handle down the pencil shaft.
