Linda Pavonetti and her colleagues conducted a "scientific" and
"replicable" study involving AR with a control group that did not use the
AR test and an experimental group that did. The results were published in
THE JOURNAL OF ADOLESCENT AND ADULT LITERACY several years ago. It is
true research, and this is a refereed and respected journal. Her
findings, in a nutshell, is that there were no significant differences
between the 2 groups except that the non-AR group had a more positive
attitude toward books and reading.
One of the problems with the research I hear about from people who are
using AR is that there is a correlation between AR and better scores in
their classes/schools. Correlation does not indicate causality. In order
to demonstrate that AR itself (the test only because all the other
elements have already been demonstrated to improve scores <reading time,
freedom to select books, etc.>) raises test scores is to conduct studies
that use control groups.
Early on in the use of AR there was some improvement. That was due to
what is known as the Hawthorne Effect (anything new tends to have some
effect due to its "newness) and those effects diminished once the novelty
wore off.
Krashen and Trelease and Kohn all have research and other commentaries at
their web sites and in their writings.
