This is in response to the thread regarding the rowdy 8th graders who find
the library "boring".

In the school where I'm doing a practicum, some of the 8th grade classes
have gotten rowdy when coming in to the library. The librarian has had to
ask them all to sit down right away, and then she basically lays down the
law with them:

She doesn't want to hear them coming down the hall.

They are to be quiet when coming in to the library.

They are to drop off any return books as they come in, and then sit down.

Once she has talked to them, she gives them time to look for books and then
check out or renew books.

This is a very nice woman who gets along very well with most students, but
she has had to crack down on the discipline. She also discussed the matter
of discipline with the assistant principal (who is in charge of discipline)
who encouraged her to circulate an email to the teachers asking for their
renewed help in keeping the library visits orderly. Things are admirably
under control! I have to say, I'm learning so much about this very
important aspect of school librarianship - tough love!
