I have held off as long as I could on this topic. Please don't flame me.

As teacher librarians we have a different role from those in the public
library arena. We are in a SCHOOL library, and part of an educational
institution. Our role is to both help students find books they want to read
and nurture the teaching/learning process. Having taught both first and
third grades before entering the library field, I know the importance of
finding the right book for a child at their comfort reading level. Students
need to practice their reading skills and well as enjoy free reading. We
are part of the teaching staff that teachers depend on to do our jobs - help
them teach with good reading materials. Most teachers allow students to have
free choice books as well as a book at their reading level.

I will never forget the third grade boy that came to my library weekly and
checked out the same 800 page anthology every week. He liked looking as
though he was a great reader. His teacher told me he never had it out of
his desk all week long. When AR was started in my school he was intrigued
and started checking out books as his level! Wow, what a different reader
he was after that. I could go on with many more stories along the same
line. I just wanted to say that AR made my students want to read a lot and
reading habits were formed. It's a lot more fun to practice reading when
you have help finding the right book for your reading ability. That's our
role in schools! We are a part of the teaching staff, working for the
families in our community to help their students learn to read and love it!

There, I feel better now.
