I have been wracking my brain trying to remember the title, author or other
pertinent information about a book I heard about this past summer at ALA in
Washington DC. It was about a way of time-keeping the Plains Indians
employed using blankets or more like sheets, that the time-keeper would draw
on. It was a pictorial method which went along with oral history. A year
would be depicted with a symbol representing a major happening such as a
drought or like event. Most memorable to me was the fact that the
anthropologists and historians were able to establish the year in our
calendar that corresponded to the Plains Indian calendar by knowledge of an
event each calendar recorded (as well as the white folks of the time).
There was a comet storm of some sort in about 1830, so all the calendars
could be reconciled. If anyone knows of this book, I have been given a
little money to spend and would LOVE to buy the book. Thanks.
