At my PreK-12 school when we go through our curriculum update cycles, I'm
right there with the English department writing and rewriting MY currirulum.
Of course one of the main components of my curriculum is exposure to
literature. Therefore, I do not feel the teachers have any right to tell
the kids what they can and cannot check out because it is infringing on my
curriculum. That being said, I do have to get along with those AR lovers,
so, for some teachers, I have a policy of one book to read (for AR or
whatever) and one book to look at, which can be anything. Even worse than
having other librarians tell me what I should and should not be doing in my
library (grin to all the "helpful" advice I've received from some LM_NET
members), I hate it when teachers try to tell me what I need to do in the
library. It's mostly at the elementary that I run into that. The thing is,
I would not ever consider telling them how to run their classrooms, even
though I do have certification to do so. Why do they think they can do it
to me, and they don't have certification?
I guess the bottom line to me is, if you are part of the curriculum cycle in
your school, explain that book choice is part of YOUR curruculum. If you
are not part of it, try to become part of it. You should definitely have
equal standing with classroom teachers, and I don't imagine you get to make
rules about how they assign math homework!!!
