Thank you to all who responded to my query about handling conflict professionally.
Please know that if your message bounced back, I did pick it up from spam folder.
Most said that you should go directly the person first; then if it wasn't settled
there, only then go to administration. Emailing was generally seen as a bad choice
all around. Several indicated they had seen similar unprofessional handling in
their own districts.
There were some thought provoking comments, including seeing email and even going
to admin (before individual talk) as gossip/tattling, making sure to write down
communication (not email-paper and pen) concentrating on facts not feelings, a
district that had a PD session on this topic, the reminder that you never know
where an email might end up, seeking advice from a trusted friend on how to handle
it if you are not sure, just don't sweat the small stuff, the need in certain
situations to have your say before the other person does, take time to step back
and think before responding, the problems with trust that unprofessional handling
brings, and that we should handle conflict at least as well as we encourage our
students to
Again, thanks. I have no illusions that people will suddenly change in how they
handle this, but at least I know I am not nuts for thinking that you ought to go to
the person privately first.
