I have to add that in my elementary school my fifth graders are required to
bring a pencil when we do our big research unit. If a student must borrow
one of mine they must leave something in deposit. It is usually jewelry, a
sweatshirt, or a shoe. Sometimes it turns into a joke, but we all have fun
with it and I don't loose my pencils.  Works pretty well as a rule.
