I understand the position that librarians shouldn't have to run book fairs to raise
money for library resources. Boards of Education should value school libraries
highly enough to provide enough funds to purchase new materials each year. However,
programming money is often left out of the budgetary mix and that's what the money
I work so hard to raise is used for. If I didn't run two book fairs a year, I
wouldn't be able to afford author visits, People as Reading Partners events, and
other types of program materials. One can only go to one's PTA so many times---I
prefer to use their help when I need a new story rug, or some other one-time
special purchase.
My problem is that my principal and district administrator keep using budgeted
library funds for other purposes---classroom furniture, other classroom
needs---when the money runs out of those budget areas. Extremely annoying but not
much can be done about it. Sigh.
