For pentatonic scales: try researching BLUES MUSIC, try Guitar (Acoustic Guitar,
Fingerstyle Guitar, Guitar Player, Blues Guitar, maybe even Spin or olling Stone)
publications, which would likely have articles about it. Pentatonic scales (also
five-note scales) are basis for American blues music and then for rock and roll).
Hope that helps.

You're right. I WAS bringing all of my pedantic optimism to the
video--and also inferring things that weren't said about WHY the kids
felt so disenfranchised from the learning. It was a knee-jerk
reaction to the horror of lecture halls where the professor is miles
away and in his/her own little world "lecturing." I was one of the
lucky ones. I had small class sizes and plenty of opportunity to
interact (without technology) throughout college. And that's what I
want for today's students (WITH technology put to creative use!)
And Dawn's point is well-taken too. Her daughter Nikki was offended
by the apathy toward learning in the video (and its reflection on her
real-life experience with classmates). However, I must say that I
hold Nikki's professors responsible, in part, for not establishing a
non-negotiable requirement for the investment of their students in
the educational process.
For me, it all comes down to the excitement and lasting change that a
good education provides. It requires a tremendous investment on the
part of educators and an equal investment from students (and
remember, as educators, it is WE who set the expectations for the
students). That student investment, I think, is more likely to come
when we step into new teaching territory that is exciting for
them. I suppose it comes down to my same old song--education is, at
all levels, meant to be about student learning and achievement. As
educators, we must continually ask ourselves how we are ENSURING that
learning.

Wise Ones, I have something odd happening with our Follett Circ Plus, and =
I can't figure out why or how to fix it. We have a book in our system, =
The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. When I search by title, the book does =
not come up. When I search by author, it is in the list, and when I =
search by keyword, the title is shown. Looking at the MARC record in the =
245 field, the record doesn't look any different than other titles that =
are working right. Something must be missing or in the wrong place.
Any suggestions as to how to figure this out would be appreciated!

Dear Shelley,
I will be late by one week submitting my reviews for the National
Geographic Atlas (due today, will send to you Nov. 13) and Tennyson
(due Nov. 13, will send to you Nov. 20).
I want to get another opinion on the atlas, and I've been delayed also
by a deadline on a paper for a class.
I hope this change in dates is not a problem for you.

Hello all:
=20
I appreciate all of the wonderful support and encouragement I have been rec=

time a bit easier. Some of you were interested in hearing about my interv=
iew yesterday. If so, read on. The school I interviewed for was previousl=
y an alternative high school. This year, they decided to go the preemptive=
route and take incoming 9th graders at risk and separate them out before t=
heir problems escalated. So I would have 150 at risk freshmen as my popula=
tion. The school - and library space - is new, only 7 years old. However =
when the school moved from the old location to this one, the SLMS was elimi=
nated. You've got it - a library space that hasn't seen a professional in =
that long. 25 brand new computers, but almost no books - pleasure, curricu=
lum based, reference or otherwise. The space has potential - I can see com=
puters along a wall so I can view the screens, tables for working at, a sma=
ll little area with comfy chairs to read in and books to fill the shelves..=
.. Some of you may remember the email I sent talking about my previous job=
s. If you do, please tell me - am I crazy for thinking I can do this??

One of our goals this year is to update the classroom literature sets that are
housed in the library office. Not only are the books themselves falling apart, but
the content in the books just isn't applicable to the lives of today's students (or
that interesting).
Currently, we are looking for a good multicultural title for the fourth grade.
Any suggestions?

What is Historical Fiction?
Historical fiction is categorized by the time of the setting and the
believability of events. The stories are set in the historical past with events
that could have possibly occurred. The author creates plot, character and events
and places them into an authentic historical setting that is true to the facts of
history.
Features that characterize historical fiction include:
An illustration of reality set in the past
Believable characters
Real-world settings in the historical past
Themes dealing with basic conflicts of humans
Language reflecting the historical period and people
