[LM_NET] GEN:Short Story

Dear LM_Netters,
  I remember reading a short story in high school in the late 70's but I 
cannot remember the title. It was about a black man who wanted to vote.  
He studied and studied with his mother quizzing him.  He then went to a 
place to sign up and he sat there thoughout the hot day and was never 
called on except maybe at the very end of the day.  Does anyone know the 
title?
