Our kids learn from day one that each book has an address and they don't
seem to have many problems after they get used to it. I will say
however that we have made the system easier to use as we rarely go out
further than 2 decimal points. I find that is sufficient for the size
of library I have (18,000 vol) and the audience I serve. Any ways, our
volunteers have a little problem seeing around the edges of the spines
so longer number just get shelved as if they were only two long anyway.
Maybe the public libraries should stop trying to be so specific with
their Dewey numbers and ease off on the decimals.

library.
Ditto to Liz. I do the same starting with my kindergarteners. They
understand that the book has a home and the sticker on the spine is the
address of their home. I also put small lables on the shelves in
Non-Fiction that inticate what the shelf holds by topic. For example the
lable "Snakes" is on the front of the shelf where the snake books are
found.

it

bookstores had more of a system like a library so you COULD find things
more easily! Some fantasy novels I have in YA and sometimes in general
fantasy in a bookstore....go figure! As for Dewey being too difficult to
learn, who says everyone has to learn it? The analogy I use with my
middle
schoolers is that the Dewey call # is simply the "address" of where the
book "lives" on the shelf, just like their house has a number on the
road
they live on. That seems to make sense to them. I don't bother to have
them learn all the Dewey ranges....why? They need to know what the
numbers
mean and how to use them following signs and labels....simply following
directions. Good luck to the Arizona public library. What are the bets
that they change at some point in the future?
