Ditto to Liz. I do the same starting with my kindergarteners. They understand that
the book has a home and the sticker on the spine is the address of their home. I
also put small lables on the shelves in Non-Fiction that inticate what the shelf
holds by topic. For example the lable "Snakes" is on the front of the shelf where
the snake books are found.

had to follow a store clerk all over the store trying to find it? Well, it
could be in ...... or it could be over in .... Many times I've wished
bookstores had more of a system like a library so you COULD find things
more easily! Some fantasy novels I have in YA and sometimes in general
fantasy in a bookstore....go figure! As for Dewey being too difficult to
learn, who says everyone has to learn it? The analogy I use with my middle
schoolers is that the Dewey call # is simply the "address" of where the
book "lives" on the shelf, just like their house has a number on the road
they live on. That seems to make sense to them. I don't bother to have
them learn all the Dewey ranges....why? They need to know what the numbers
mean and how to use them following signs and labels....simply following
directions. Good luck to the Arizona public library. What are the bets
that they change at some point in the future?
