The Center for Digital Literacy at Syracuse University sponsors an
annual event, run totally by grad students, called E*LIT (Enriching
Literacy through Information Technology). Each year we choose a
children's author (gr. K-8) whose work represents an underrepresented
group in our society and students in the Central New York area create
technology-based projects inspired by the author's work and/or life.
Each project is evaluated and we bus the winning students to our campus
for a presentation by and lunch and book signing with the author.
In 2004, our E*LIT author was Charles R. Smith Jr., an African-American
poet/photographer who recited his poetry to a rap beat while students
clapped and joined in. In 2005, we brought in Joe Cepeda, award-winning,
Latino-American illustrator and author who used a Webcam to show the
children his art studio (in L.A.) as he described his illustration
process. In 2006, Joanne Shenandoah, Grammy-award winning
singer-songwriter and author, used her beautiful voice to read and sing
native American legends and folktales while the children accompanied her
on hand-made instruments. In 2007, over 250 children created projects
about people with disabilities as they delighted to the stories told by
Myron Uhlberg about growing up in Brooklyn, the son of deaf parents.
We are looking for your help in identifying our 2008 E*LIT author. This
year we would like to recognize an Asian-American woman author who has
written literature for young children that reflects an Asian culture.
We would appreciate your nominations of up to three authors, a couple
of titles for each nominated author, and a brief statement of what is
distinctive about their work.
Please send your nominations to my email address: drruth@syr.edu no
later than June 5. We hope to announce the selected author on LM_NET
before the end of June.
Thank you so much for your help.
