POSITION TITLE: Children’s Services Manager

DEPARTMENT: Children’s Services

STARTING SALARY: $54,704 — $69,747 annually (effective July 1, 2007)

HOURS: Full-time (38 hours per week)

A unique professional opportunity: join one of the busiest libraries  
in Illinois as we get ready to move into our new 122,000 sq. foot  
state-of-the-art building by late 2007. Be part of the team that  
expands an already successful menu of programs using the dedicated  
children’s program room plus five other meeting rooms, and implements  
the $500,000 Opening Day Collection for the expected 20 percent  
increase in circulation.

Champaign and sister city Urbana are home to the University of  
Illinois and the Center for Children’s Books. Champaign residents  
enjoy a high standard of living with low cost housing and excellent  
medical facilities. Strong population growth supports exciting urban  
development of new restaurants, clubs, and retail in vibrant  
downtown, campus, and fringe areas, as well as growing library  
service. The library is highly regarded in the community and has been  
successful in fund raising, exceeding the goal for the library’s  
building campaign, and winning LSTA grants in recent years exceeding  
$100,000 each to fund its new award-winning, interactive website,  
service to business, and outreach to babies born in local hospitals.

DUTIES

The Children’s Services Manager is responsible for creating a climate  
of welcome and responsive atmosphere of service for children from  
birth through grade 5 and their adult caregivers by inspiring and  
supervising the activities of ten experienced and talented staff  
members, training and setting a good example in the areas of  
programming, storytelling, selection, and customer service. The  
manager represents the library in the community, and participates on  
the library’s management team. Competitive salary and excellent

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s of Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution; three  
years of public library experience with children; proven supervisory  
experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and  
education. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and energetic,  
will have a strong commitment to public service, will love people and  
books, and will have experience administering library service.
