Dear Great Brain,
Three years ago, our district did away with librarians, and I was sent back
to the classroom. Aides run our libraries. As background info, you need to
know that our contract states that all teachers in the district get the same
amount of planning time. Our high school is switching to trimesters with 70
minute classes. In order to keep planning time balanced, the h.s. teachers
will get 50 minutes a day of planning time. For the other 20 minutes, they
are being assigned a "duty."
Guess what the duty is? The aide who has been doing a really nice job is
being re-assigned, and each teacher will take a 20 minute shift per day in
the library. My time is to be spent as "district librarian." I will get
one class period per day in the library and teach the rest of the time. This
just has disaster written over it on so many levels that I don't even know
where to start.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to make this work? Anybody have any good
ways to approach admin to let them see what a disaster this could be? Does
anybody see anything good about this situation that I may be missing?
Thanks,
Linda Wilson-Brown
