Thanks to all who responded to my May 22 Target: Elem: weeding &
replacing dinosaur books, which asked for something specific that can
be looked for as a basis for determining whether to keep or discard a
book about dinosaurs.
Below are the suggestions -

While Florida's Sunlink Weed of the Month is no longer being
maintained, it is still very useful.

Hi. One criteria I would use is rid the shelves of books that don't
have the idea that some dinosaurs were more bird-like than previously
thought. I think I would consider the new name for the Brontosaurus
(Apatosaurus) would be a culling criteria, too. Age of a book should
be considered, as well as readability for your school's students. For
instance, I would be hard-pressed to throw away Paris's Dinosaur Time
(illus. by A Lobel). Maybe one could use an old book to demonstrate
how information (and research) keeps on evolving. Just my thoughts.
When looking into this some years ago I learned that the ones that
show the dinosaur dragging the tail behind are obsolete. The current
theory now is that dinosaurs were built more like birds and walked on
two legs with the tail more in the air and NOT dragging behind. If
you find a book with new illustrations, and then look at an old one,
I think it will be clear to you what the difference is.
There is a fantastic book called Less is More: A Practical Guide to
Weeding School Library Collections (Baumbach)…. that was discussed
here last fall I think.
