[LM_NET] Looking for Sci Fi title

This has been bugging me for some time.  It is about a world(?) 
society(?) where there is a collective subconscious and the main 
character is exploring the depths and comes on huge basalt blocks 
with some sort of writing on them.  The story is at least 30 yrs old. 
That's it.  That is all I can remember.  Anyone have any clues??
