Hi Michelle-
My library media specialist forwarded your email to me as I have been
the one to take on the daunting task of creating a school newspaper! I
found a great printing company that produces 11x17 papers on newsprint.
The results were fabulous and the cost is reasonable. (We applied for a
grant from a local funding group.) www.jsprinting.com

recommend several different software programs for producing a newspaper.
I have a strong tech support crew that encouraged me to buy QuarkXPress,
a software that is used by real newspapers. It's pretty tricky, but
like any new program, we played around and got the hang of it. I
started the paper by presenting several lessons about newspaper
reporting and writing. We surrounded ourselves with authentic work,
analyzing and "naming" stories--columns, editorials, analysis stories,
feature stories, and news stories. We discussed voice and bias, etc.
It was really exciting. However, it's VERY time consuming. The results
are well worth the effort. Imagine a classroom full of students, feet
up, reading their very own newspaper!
-Hope this was helpful. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
