First I would like to thank everyone who sent a response.

Original Target: If you have the book To Dance: a Memoir by Siena Cherson Siegel
what section do you place it in? Is it with biography or 741.5 or another area?

Responses:

I am putting mine with the graphic novels (the fact that the call number for
graphic novels is G FIC is going to be a bit of a problem; I may just make it
G792.8 or something like that!!). That is definitely where our copy will be used
most. Otherwise I would decide to either put it with biography or with dance, but
not not not in 741.5, unless I had other graphic novels at that number.

 -------

At UM we catalog biographies and memoirs under the subject area or the
specific number assigned to that person, if there is one. So in your case
it would be the 741.5 number and then cuttered for Siegel.

--------

I have most of my graphic novels together for example FIC GRA or YA GRA
or JF GRA because students. When I first started getting them, I
catalogued them as 741. whatever, but for some reason, kids didn't
find them there. When I heard that many libraries were putting them in
a gn section, that made sense to me and it works for the kids. My
opinion.

----------

I put my copy with the graphic novels (GN 741.5 Sie)...this is where my
students would expect to find it. Please post a hit, as I'm curious
what others think.

 -------

I checked EzCat, searching several libraries simultaneously. Those that had the
book placed it in 741.5.

 ------

At Mackin we have placed this title in 792.802/8092 for ballet
dancers and coded the book as an autobiography.

 ------

mine is 741.5

 ------

From your post, I would gather you do not have a separate Graphic Novel collection
in which to place the title. So, to me, the question, is where will the students
most likely find it?

If you do have a collection of GN in the 741.5 section, I would strongly recommend
putting it there. It has "what do I read next" ties to other titles you might
purchase, especially a nice dance manga called Swan. This placement also sets up a
collection decision to shelve the format together no matter what area the content
may fall (fic, nf, bio, etc.)

If you have no GN section to speak of, put the book in bio. It would get lost with
the art books without other GN to support it.

Enjoy, I loved the book!

------

We have central cataloging and it came to us in Biography, but we had it changed to
741.5 where it would be more likely to be browsed.

 ------

Ours is in the Graphic Novel section, with the call number GN 792.802 Siegel. We
have all of our graphic novels sit together, but the non-fiction are numbered just
as they would be in the circulating collection. We have them sit with the graphic
novels in the hope, at least somewhat borne out, that they will be seen and read
more.

 --------

I would place it in biography due to practice in our system. You get to
make a choice.
