We have done this is LISD. The students type own barcode # (which is
also LISD ID # and the same as what they use for lunch). Then we also have
a scanner set up beside keypad so they can scan books.
A catch is that you have to be SURE to teach them to press a certain key -
I don't have one to look at - maybe "clear" or some such - before a student
leaves the keypad. This is critical. If you don't do this you end up
having people checked out to people and all books checked out to one
student, etc.
KEY IS "ESC"
I tell my students "Be sure to hit ESC to escape me griping at you". that
works for most of them. They are also told that they are responsible for
any books checked out to them
We use a keypad similar to what is used in the cafeteria. Our circ system
(Horizon by Dynix) was able to interface with it. You can buy them right at
office supply stores. You just need to check with your circ system provider
to get instructions for uploading the software.
If you need more information on this, you can contact David Schuster, the
head of library tech services for Plano ISD (david.schuster@pisd.edu).
I bought a computer number pad that plugs into the USB port. I use Follett
Circulation Plus. In our system we use the student ID# for PEMS as the
student barcode# and the ID# in our system. Then you can choose barcode or
ID they put in their # push enter two times and the system goes directly to
their record. Let me know if this is what you are talking about and/or if
you need more information.
I personally have a wireless mouse and keypad that I attach to my laptop
when I work with the circulation program and do not have a regular key board
attached. I can enter numbers on a keypad faster than I can scan a booktl
