[LM_NET] Elem - Looking for a book

Hi all,

I have had a request from our JR/SR HS librarian to find a book for a  
senior. He remembers reading it in sixth grade. I'm not at school  
today so I can't check with the teacher he had.
Everyone has been so great on this list and I know there is someone  
out there who know what this series is.

It was a series of at least four books about a brother and sister who  
live in a place where all children have parts of their spines removed  
and replaced with orbs that give them magic powers and these siblings  
have more power than most.  This would have been in the 2000-2001  
school year that he read these and he said that the teacher did not  
have the fourth volume by the time they left her class.

If anyone knows of a good site or resource for fantasy bibliographies  
that would be very helpful too!
