I recently had our math coach come in with a list of materials that
she wanted to pull any copies that I had more than one of and put
into a special collection for teachers to check out. I very nicely
said that it shouldn't be done. The teachers can check them out just
as easily from the library and it makes no sense to have lots of
little collections of stuff. If they search the catalog, then come to
the library to find them they wouldn't be where they should be. They
don't realize that you just can't pull the books off the shelf. They
would need to be recatalogued and spine labled and that takes too
much time for the difference in accessibility.
We do have a new 'book room' but it is lots of multiple copies for
teachers to use with guided reading and literature groups. We don't
have room in the main library for these kind of multiple copies so
they are off in another area adjacent to the library. I did want to
barcode them all so it would be easier to search and keep track of
them, but I lost that battle so they are on a self-checkout system.
We'll have to see if they get used!
We will have a new literacy coach next year, but she is also a former
librarian so that should help keep any other dynasty be built. I hope!
