Thanks, everyone, for your ideas for our Reading Award. Our fifth grade team loved
the variety of responses! Here are the responses I received:
1. What about McGuffey who created the McGuffey readers? Not sure what his first
name was...
2. The creator of the Dick and Jane series is Zerna Sharp.
3. Alexandra or Alexander for the Library of Alexandria?
4. President John Adams was famous for reading...
5. There is that Thomas Jefferson quote "I cannot live without books"
6. This may sound lame, but I can't think of a more famous reader than
Oprah Winfrey. I personally think she has done more to promote reading
than anyone else I can think of!
7. The Websters advanced the cause of reading by trying to standardize
spellings and publishing their dictionaries.
8. Also, I remember reading once that Bill Clinton read several newspapers
cover to cover each day while he was president. I would assume that other
presidents probably do the same, so "Presidential" would be an appropriate
name.
9. The first readers were Horn Books, made of horns, with scriptures
written on them.
10. What about Thomas Jefferson? After all it was his extensive library that
became what is now the Library of Congress.
11. What about Annie Sullivan, who was herself a voracious reader,
and opened the world of language to Helen Keller?
12. What about Captain Kangaroo? He always read to me as a child... Or is that
too babyish or out of date?
13. McGuffey reader's were quite famous.
14. Harry S Truman was real known for his reading of history.
15. John Adams placed great value on reading.
16. Dick and Jane
17. How about the actor / reader who taped the audio edition of the Harry
Potter books.
18. What about McGuffey?
19. The McGuffey Readers, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McGuffey_Readers,
were widely used in the 1800s to teach reading.
20. If my memory hasn't failed me, I seem to recall that JFK read more than
40 newspapers each day.
21.How about the "Thomas Jefferson" reading award? He is the founder of the
Library of Congress. His personal library is the Library's core, and the
vast range of his interest determined the universal and diverse nature
of the Library's collections and activities.
22. I found the following quote at this website:
http://www.usembassy.kz/documents/reading_congress.html
"Oprah Winfrey has had a big impact on reading in the United States with her Book
Club. But First Lady Laura Bush is the most famous American advocate for reading.
She has said that being able to read, and choosing what we read, is how we shape
our beliefs, our minds, and our characters. She has led several efforts to promote
reading in the United States and broader literacy campaigns to promote
cross-cultural understanding." I think the Laura Bush award would be a great name.
I had also thought of Jim Trelease and Judy Freeman as important people who
promote reading.
23. I don't know if the McGuffey Readers are the first, but should be one of the
first primer readers.
24. How about the McGuffy Award or the Noah Webster Award?
25. Abraham Lincoln was well known for his passion for books. He spent so little
time in school that he'd borrow just about any book he could and read every chance
he got.
26. How about someone famous for promoting "reading"....or someone who
supports reading research? If not a librarian (you or someone else), then perhaps:
Jim Trelease (leads you to introduce the "Read Aloud Handbook" to students and
parents)
Thanks to all,
